The Sun Rises over Grace Oliver Beach

On a recent Sunday morning, I was awakened at 4:30am by a certain 6 1/2 year old resident of our household.  I was upset at the early wake up but, after getting him back in bed, took a look outside and at weather apps to try to decide if it was worth getting up and out of the house for a sunrise shoot.  The weather looked iffy but I decided to give it a shot.  After checking the expected location of the sunrise, I headed out to Grace Oliver beach. I started off photographing the dawn at Little Harbor but [...]

Chasing the Light 2 – Sunburst from Cove Lane

So after leaving Castle Rock a bit disappointed in missing the best light, I drove further up the Neck, around Chandler Hovey and parked near Cove Lane.  I took advantage of the public way and walked down to the beach to see if the sunset might hold some promise.  I found this scene before me and a smile crept onto my face...maybe this would make up for having struck out a bit at Castle Rock. I set about choosing my composition and made sure all the elements were where I wanted them. I then closed down the aperture to f/22 [...]

Blue Dawn on Devereux Beach

I have to admit that it took me a minute to remember where I took this image when I looked through the archives for today's post.  This was taken in early May during the blue hour that precedes the dawn.  With the incredibly low tide and some leftover moisture on the sand, Devereux beach took on a great mirrored appearance.  If it wasn't for the familiar lamp posts on the causeway, I probably would have been scratching my head for a while longer trying to remember where I was when I took this.  Hope you enjoy this calm morning view [...]

Long Exposure – Scattered Rocks at Preston Beach

Two and a half minutes - that's how long this image took to produce.  I had set out at the end of May to photograph Preston beach at sunset.  The clouds and sunset didn't offer much so I decided to simplify the scene by composing it for a long exposure black and white image.  The rocks in the foreground balance out the houses beyond.  The long exposure turned the ocean into a mirror to reflect the light in the sky.

Rainbows over Devereux Beach

I'm fairly certain that I did not have a single rainbow image in the first three summers of living in Marblehead.  All of a sudden, I find myself with so many I have to include two in this one post!  Back in early June, a storm came through in the evening as I was getting home from work.  I had enough time to grab the camera bag and race down to Devereux beach.  When I got there, I saw this vibrant rainbow and sought a good composition to include some landmarks.  I settled on the shelter (though wish the trash [...]

Devereux Beach Silhouettes

July 3rd was a very productive day in hindsight.  I used the day to scout out locations for shooting the fireworks the following day.  As part of that scouting mission, I biked to the causeway and tried to figure out compositions using my longest lens.  When I finished, I turned and saw the sun was in the perfect spot to make everyone on Devereux appear as silhouettes.  I took a few photos from up there and decided this was my favorite.  The clouds and surf were great but it's the various people that make this shot for me. If you [...]

The Lifeguard Chair and the Rainbow

Devereux beach was my first stop after Saturday's storm passed and the sun dipped below the clouds. As I arrived, I saw this rainbow in the distance and noted that the lifeguard chairs were back.  These were a favorite subject last year (click here) and I quickly ran to compose this image containing two of my 'favorite things'. It was only after shooting this rainbow that I turned and noted the much larger one situated over the Neck.  I posted the first shot of that bow over Children's Island on Monday (click here) and have more to share in the [...]

Long Exposure – Crumbling Sand at Preston Beach

Another early image - this is the first long exposure that I took in Marblehead and again seems fitting for a theme of the week.  I was exploring Preston beach at sunset on May 27th and found the outflow track from the drainage pipe had formed this great channel in the sand.  I set up the camera on a tripod and took a few images as the sun set and the blue hour began.  The sand kept crumbling into the rushing water and, during this 25 second exposure, it had just calved and created this beautiful passage. Make sure you [...]

Fishing off Preston Beach

This day has put me in a monochrome mood and this is a recent favorite in black and white.  I was out at Preston beach at the end of May shooting the sunset and some long exposures when I saw this guy make his way out to the edge of the rocks.  I ran across the beach to try to place him in alignment with the distant island.  The sea was calm and the sky cloudless so I focused on the main elements with a plan to convert this to a black and white image.  I love how you can [...]

Long Exposure – Stramski Pier Reflecting in the Water

After four straight days of grey skies and rain, the sky finally cleared and the sun shone on a Tuesday night.  After putting the kids to bed (a bit early) I left the house in search of images.  I found a few nice clouds along Devereux beach and then drove out to the newest public pier in town during the blue hour. I started off shooting this pier from the other side but didn't like the houses in the background or the distant oil refinery on the Salem side.  In a stroke of genius, I walked to the other side [...]
