Glover’s Regiment at the Christmas Walk Parade

This weekend marked the Annual Christmas Walk and, as the festivities began, a light snow fall commenced to add to the festive mood.  After Santa landed by way of a lobster boat and took photos with the assembled kids, a parade took place led to Glover's Regiment.  I happened to have ended up in front of Old Town House with my kids and, as the regiment marched up State Street, I quickly grabbed the camera and found an angle to capture this moment.  When the lead drummers turned, I grabbed this image.  The Regiment largely hid the assembled crowd and [...]

Silhouettes on Preston Beach

The rule of thumb is that you should put away the camera when the sun is high overhead.  The light tends to be fairly flat and very bright making it difficult to get a solid landscape or any other shot.  As it happened, I was out with the kids at Preston Beach on this late August day and had my camera and a long lens with me.  I managed a few decent shots of the kids but, as we walked back from the tide pools, I saw this great scene. A boat tied up off the shore, people in and [...]

Fishing under the Full Moon

With this month's full moon, also known as the Sturgeon moon, I sought out a new spot from which to capture the rise.  I charted the expected location of its ascent and decided to use Marblehead Rock as my landmark with which to anchor the moon to a familiar spot.  I set up and waited for the moon to rise above a low marine layer of clouds.  Once it did, I started shooting - first wider shots to include the entire island and then closer shots. As the moon climbed in the sky, a boat came by on the way [...]

Devereux Beach Silhouettes

July 3rd was a very productive day in hindsight.  I used the day to scout out locations for shooting the fireworks the following day.  As part of that scouting mission, I biked to the causeway and tried to figure out compositions using my longest lens.  When I finished, I turned and saw the sun was in the perfect spot to make everyone on Devereux appear as silhouettes.  I took a few photos from up there and decided this was my favorite.  The clouds and surf were great but it's the various people that make this shot for me. If you [...]

Fireworks from Crocker Park

Another Fourth of July has come and gone and, with it, another incredible fireworks display over the harbor.  I struggled in choosing a spot for this year's show.  I had previously shot twice from Chandler Hovey park and once from Fort Sewall.  After scouting areas early this week, I decided on Crocker Park.  As I did in the past two years, I sought a vantage point from which I could include the crowd.  I found that seeing people in the image helped pull me in and make me feel like I was there (well, you know what I mean). I [...]

Marblehead Fireworks – Best Show Around

I couldn't think of a better image to start off this extended Fourth of July weekend than my first shot of Marblehead fireworks.  Since I started this site in August 2010, this image taken from the 2009 show has never been shared.  Seemed like a great way to set the scene for what promises to be a great week.  I'm posting my other Marblehead fireworks images below for those who may have missed them or just want a taste of what's to come this Wednesday (in Marblehead). Update: New in 2014, you can donate to the Marblehead Fireworks online!  The [...]

Best of Show – Marblehead Festival of Arts 2012

I am thrilled, honored and humbled that the jurors of the 2012 Marblehead Festival of Arts have chosen 'A Walk in the Fog' as Best of Show in photography.  This is an incredible and unexpected honor.  As I sought to show in the two posts from this week, we only moved to Marblehead in May 2008 and I started this project in August 2010.  Here I am a few short years later receiving this incredible honor for one of my images. I will be receiving the award on Friday night outside Abbot and will be sitting at Old Town House [...]

Fishing off Preston Beach

This day has put me in a monochrome mood and this is a recent favorite in black and white.  I was out at Preston beach at the end of May shooting the sunset and some long exposures when I saw this guy make his way out to the edge of the rocks.  I ran across the beach to try to place him in alignment with the distant island.  The sea was calm and the sky cloudless so I focused on the main elements with a plan to convert this to a black and white image.  I love how you can [...]

Fishing in the Storm

We had a short break from the rain on Sunday and so I took my son out to Fort Sewall for some exploration.  The sea was choppy and large waves crashed on the rocks as we were there at high tide.  When we reached the edge of the hill, we noticed this lone fisherman on the rocks.  His perch was precarious and the waves crashed all around him.  It looked like a rogue wave could have toppled him at any moment but he remained there casting his line into the water.  After a good 20 minutes of watching him, they [...]

Riding the Chair Swing at the Devereux Carnival

The carnival has come and gone but not before I managed a few new images of the fun.  I had this image in mind as soon as the first postings went up about the carnival coming back to Devereux beach.  Unfortunately rain and fog interfered with those plans - that is until the very last day. On Sunday, I returned to the carnival grounds after spending $40 in 1 hour with the kids and set up for this shot.  The carnival was getting ready to close and the crowd thinning out.  There were only two kids on the chair swing [...]
