Greystone Beach After the Storm

For the past few days now, I've been chasing Sandy's effects both during and after the storm's peak.  I had a feeling that one of these mornings might prove to be a decent one for a sunrise shoot and realized that this morning was just the one.  On Wednesday, I looked out and noted some nice clouds and a touch of pink in the sky.  I quickly got into the car and drove off only to turn around when I realized I had forgotten my tripod! I finally made it out and realized the light was changing fast.  Did a [...]

Long Exposure – Clouds Fly Over Browns Island

I remember when I took this photo in February that it had been prompted in large part by someone at the Reporter asking if I had any shots of Brown's (or Crowninshield) Island.  I had to confess I didn't have any that featured the whole island and so I made it a point to head down to Harding Lane and find a good vantage point. I had chosen a day with good clouds and a nice wind and decided to shoot this as a long exposure.  The fading light made exposures quite difficult and I managed a single good image [...]

Chasing the Light – One Sunset, Five Unique Photos

This will be a bit of a longer post to recap this great Summer sunset.  I also want to point out that there will not be any posts for the next few days as I am driving up to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont to try and capture the incredible color up there. Today, I wanted to share the last image from a spectacular sunset that took place back in mid-August and explain some of my thought process at the time.  To refresh your memory, for a stretch of 3-4 nights in August, we had been getting these incredible deep [...]

Tinkers Island off Marblehead Neck

In mid-August, my son and I were invited out for an impromptu fishing excursion off the rocks on Marblehead Neck.  I had never been to this section of the neck previously (seeing as there are no public ways accessible) and was glad I had thought to bring my camera.  As the boys scampered on the rocks looking for a fishing spot (a losing effort at dead low tide), I sought out compositions with which to frame the distant view of Tinker's Island.  I settled on this as my favorite with the rock formations in the foreground and the great expansive clouds above. [...]

Long Exposure – Clouds Pass Marblehead Light

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I had set out on Saturday hoping to use the fast moving clouds for a long exposure image.  It has been a while since I had pulled out the 10-stop filter and played with exposures measured in minutes.  As the light faded, I found myself near the edge of the lot and trying to capture the lighthouse with clouds behind and the crashing waves transformed to mist below. In this two minute exposure, you can make out the streaks of clouds in the sky.  Even more amazing is the swirls of white in the [...]

Sun Rays over Marblehead Skyline

On Saturday, a series of storms barreled through New England.  As they passed, I noticed that the clouds overhead seemed to fly by and I decided to head out for some long exposure shots.  I drove across the causeway and then stopped at Castle Rock to watch the crashing waves for a while.  I then headed to Chandler Hovey park in hopes of getting the clouds drifting over the lighthouse. Before I could shoot a long exposure however, I noticed this scene before me and couldn't pass up the opportunity.  Every few minutes, a break in the clouds would lead [...]

Sunset over Crashing Waves from Surf Street

I was sitting at the computer last night having just finished reading Percy Jackson to my son and was getting ready to catch up on a backlog of photos.  As I caught up on Facebook posts, I saw one from All Marblehead giving photographers a heads up that a nice sunset was brewing.  I looked at my camera bag, back at the screen of photos and decided to head out... As soon as I got in the car, I realized I made the right choice - nice pink clouds in the sky.  Only problem was that it seemed like colors [...]

Another Epic Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I've been fortunate to witness and capture some truly astonishing sunsets this Summer.  That being said, the epic sunset I witnessed on August 21st, might trump them all.  I had witnessed some incredible light shows for several nights leading up to this one but work and kids kept me from running out each night with the camera and tripod.  On this night, I had decided to go out no matter the conditions...and then almost changed my mind when the wispy clouds that had covered the harbor left and were replaced by a heavy grey one. I decided that I would at least [...]

Big Sky over Marblehead Harbor

This Summer seems to have brought with it more humidity and, as if to redeem the burden of a hot, wet season, big clouds have followed.  On this day, I watched some great clouds come and go and, when this one set up overhead, I decided to chase it.  As I got to Riverhead beach, the light took on the orange glow of late Summer and the clouds reflected that beautifully.  You can just make out Abbot Hall in the distance as well as the boats filling the harbor but the clouds and reflection are really the main event.

Sailing Past Chandler Hovey Park

One Sunday in August, our former neighbors (and now friends) invited us out for an early afternoon sail.  We made our way out of the harbor and I was pleased to see plenty of other boats doing the same.  As the kids took turns piloting the boat and the adults took care to make sure we followed a steady course, I happily shot from the side.  Though I haven't had many opportunities to shoot from the water, I have a few favorite images from those rare chances.  There's just something about being on the water and composing images from that [...]
