Sunset from Bass Rock Lane

I mentioned on Monday's post that I had gone out last Wednesday as the sun set to explore Bass Rock Lane.  After taking a few images of the houses that line the water's edge, I settled down near this tide pool to catch reflections of the setting sun.  This was taken at the peak of the night's color show.  The still waters in the tide pool made for a great reflective surface that mirrored what was happening in the sky above.  It's always exciting to find a new spot to shoot from and even more so when the weather and [...]

Tide Pools and Reflected Sunset Light

On Wednesday December 5th, I was just getting home after taking care of errands all day and noted the light and clouds as sunset approached.  I went inside to grab the camera and drove out again to find a new spot.  The light changed quickly as the sun ducked below the horizon and I had enough time to make it across Atlantic Avenue to Bass Rock Lane before the light disappeared.  I managed to capture one frame of the homes along the water illuminated by light and then began to explore the rock formations at the end of Bass Rock [...]

A Late November Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I went out last night in hopes that the clouds would break and allow me to shoot November's full moon.  As I drove out to my intended destination, I looked in the rearview mirror and saw the sun slowly set and the clouds break into great patterns.  I decided to head straight to Fort Sewall first and hoped the light would hold til I got there. I ran up the hill and explored both ends of the Fort but noted that the harbor side offered the best light.  As the sun set, the light was picked up by the water. [...]

Thankful for Two Great Years of Sharing Images of Marblehead

It's Thanksgiving and I wanted to take this opportunity to give thanks to this incredible community for welcoming me and showing such support of my attempts to photograph this beautiful town I feel fortunate to call home. Thank you to all those who commented on my images both here and on my Facebook page. Thank you to everyone who emailed me with words of support and encouragement when an image had a particular effect on them. Thank you to all those who welcomed me into their physical homes (and roofs) during the Rooftop Thursday series.  And to all those who [...]

November Sunset over Devereux Beach

Here is another image taken this past Sunday when all the elements seemed to line up to offer a great Fall sunset.  As the clouds developed overhead, I made my way down to Devereux beach and set about exploring the light and movement of the ocean.  I noted that, since Superstorm Sandy came and went, the sand seemed much finer and lacking the rocks that had always characterized this stretch of beach.  When I chose this spot for the image, I felt a bit like I was on another smooth beach in the Carolinas rather than Devereux in Marblehead.  Then [...]

Tonight’s Sunset over the Causeway

For the first night in what seems like forever, the conditions seemed right for a solid sunset.  There were nice clouds in the sky, it wasn't bitterly cold out and I was free to shoot (not stuck at work watching as the sky exploded in different colors).  I made my way down Ocean Avenue and stopped at Devereux beach.  The light looked good but I decided to quickly scout out the view from the Neck.  Turned out Devereux had the best vantage point and I got to shooting. I started off at 3:50pm near the water's edge.  I shot the [...]

Summer Sunset at Chandler Hovey Park

Is it too early for a 'warm' picture?  It's been freezing lately and this morning is no exception.  As I watched the election results roll in last night, I combed through my photo archive (currently with 268 images waiting to post) and settled on this shot taken on August 2nd.  The image struck me for the warm feel coming from the colors of the sunset.  There is a whole lot more happening here though which is what drew me to this scene in the first place. First you have the brightly colored sails on the water.  There's a family gathered [...]

Long Exposure – Clouds Fly Over Browns Island

I remember when I took this photo in February that it had been prompted in large part by someone at the Reporter asking if I had any shots of Brown's (or Crowninshield) Island.  I had to confess I didn't have any that featured the whole island and so I made it a point to head down to Harding Lane and find a good vantage point. I had chosen a day with good clouds and a nice wind and decided to shoot this as a long exposure.  The fading light made exposures quite difficult and I managed a single good image [...]

Sunset from the Village Street Pier

Wednesdays in Marblehead resumes after the brief hiatus to shoot foliage in Vermont (if you missed the iPhone sneak peak, click HERE for the final shot - it's the first on the page).  I have been meaning to post this image for a while now but other shots kept cutting ahead of it.  This was taken at the end of August and I still remember how warm and humid it was on this night and how many mosquitoes kept buzzing around me as I shot this. I had noted the colors developing as the sun set and decided to drive [...]

Chasing the Light – One Sunset, Five Unique Photos

This will be a bit of a longer post to recap this great Summer sunset.  I also want to point out that there will not be any posts for the next few days as I am driving up to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont to try and capture the incredible color up there. Today, I wanted to share the last image from a spectacular sunset that took place back in mid-August and explain some of my thought process at the time.  To refresh your memory, for a stretch of 3-4 nights in August, we had been getting these incredible deep [...]
